Addis Ababa, March 15, 2024 - To commemorate International Women's Day 2024, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Women teamed up to emphasize the imperative of mobilizing development partners and stakeholders to invest in women and accelerate progress toward gender equality and sustainable development goals.
The theme of the event, "Mobilizing Development Partners and Stakeholders to Invest in Women and Accelerate Progress," highlighted the critical role that investing in women plays in advancing development objectives.
Mr. Koffi Kouame, Country Representative of UNFPA, said, "Investing in women was not just a moral imperative but a strategic necessity. Empowering women and girls unlocks their potential to drive socio-economic progress, foster inclusive societies, and achieve sustainable development."
Ms. Cecile Mukarubuga, the Country Representative of UN Women, added, "International Women's Day serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles for gender equality and women's rights worldwide. By prioritizing investments in women, we could catalyze transformative change, break down barriers, and create a more equitable world for all."
The joint commemoration event by UNFPA and UN Women featured keynote addresses, successful intervention cases, and an interactive session to foster dialogue, share best practices, and galvanize support for gender-responsive programs in Ethiopia.
Maria Munir, President of the Network of Shelters for GBV Survivors, passionately conveyed her firsthand experiences and underscored the crucial need for investment in survivors of gender-based violence. "We've witnessed the profound impact of our efforts in healing both hearts and bodies," she emphasized. "Yet, resources remain scarce, while the demand continues to surge at an alarming pace."
Meanwhile, Lindsay Beiyne, Executive Director of the Ethiopian Women Lawyer's Association, shed light on the successful strategies that have facilitated the provision of essential legal aid services to women, thanks to the unwavering support of UNFPA.
During the ceremony, captivating videos showcasing the impactful interventions by UN Women and UNFPA were screened. UNFPA also launched a compelling call-to-action video, featuring partners such as the Ambassador of the UK to Ethiopia, the Ambassador of Ireland to Ethiopia, the Ambassador of Canada to Ethiopia, the State Minister at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, as well as heads of corporations and representatives from the European Investment Bank. The video urged for increased investment and concrete actions, emphasizing the importance of turning words into deeds.
Participants at the event included ambassadors, diplomats, government officials, civil society representatives, development partners, women leaders, youth advocates, and stakeholders committed to advancing gender equality and women's empowerment.
