UNFPA Ethiopia - 50 Years of Ensuring Rights and Choices for All in Ethiopia
UNFPA, the United Nations Sexual and Reproductive Health Agency, started its mission in Ethiopia in 1973 and has implemented 9 Country Programmes aligned with Ethiopian government priorities, MDG-SDG, and UN development frameworks. My Body Is My Own
We have the inherent right to choose what we do with our body, to ensure its protection and care, to pursue its expression. The quality of our lives depends on it. In fact, our lives themselves depend on it.

Research Article: Distribution of maternity waiting homes and their correlation with perinatal mortality and direct obstetric complication rates in Ethiopia
Ethiopia has been expanding maternity waiting homes to bridge geographical gaps between health facilities and communities in order to improve access to skilled care. In 2015, the Ministry of Health revised its national guidelines to standardize the rapid expansion of waiting homes. Little has been done to document their distribution, service availability and readiness. This paper addresses these gaps as well as their association with perinatal mortality and obstetric complication rates

UNFPA Supported Maternity Waiting Homes in Ethiopia: Good Practices and Lessons Learned
Maternity waiting homes contribute in increasing utilization of maternal health services particularly among women living in rural areas where distance, topography, and road access are barriers to timely access health centres. Lessons related to specific practices are identified and described in this document.
The Power of Choice: Reproductive Rights and the Demographic Transition

Good Practices and Lessons Learned from the Prevention and Management of Gender-based Violence in Ethiopia Programme
As part of the overall effort to improve the response and prevention mechanism, UNFPA has been supporting implementation of a programme entitled Prevention and Management of Gender Based Violence with the objective of strengthening community response to promote and protect the rights of women and girls in relation to harmful traditional practices and gender-based violence; strengthening institutional response to address harmful traditional practices and gender-based violence; and provide information and services to survivors of gender-based violence, including within a humanitarian context. This was aligned with the UNDAF Outcome that “by 2015, women, youth and children are increasingly protected and rehabilitated from abuse, violence, exploitation and discrimination”. The programme funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy was implemented together with implementing partners – 11 NGOs and 1Governmental Organization operating in six Regions of the country (Amhara, Oromiya, SNNPR, Tigray, Benishangul-Gumuz and Addis Ababa).
The time frame for the implementation of the programme – October 2012-December 2015 was used as the basis for the documentation of good practices and lessons learnt.
