In the vibrant city of Jimma, where the energy of daily life merges with the aspirations of its youth, two remarkable individuals have emerged as catalysts for change. Endegena Shimeles, a 23-year-old food engineering graduate, leads the youth center and Youth Friendly Corner supported by UNFPA with funds from the Governments of Spain and Norway and implemented by Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia (FGAE).

Endegena's journey began eight years ago when she first walked through the center's doors. Today, she aspires to become a life member of the Corner ready to join the adult wing and deepen her impact on the community.

Endegena is known not just for her academic achievements but for her commitment to youth empowerment. While at Jimma University, she founded a girls' club focused on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) awareness. Her dedication to advocacy has made her a respected figure among her peers, and she actively promotes SRH education through creative methods like music and drama.

“Creating spaces for discussion and learning is vital,” Endegena emphasizes. “I want to inspire young women to understand their rights and access the services they deserve.” Her vision extends beyond advocacy; she dreams of becoming a successful entrepreneur, demonstrating that with determination and focus, anything is possible.

Alongside her stands Semir Kemal, also 23, a testament to resilience and transformation. Once a school dropout struggling with addiction, Semir's life changed when he found support at the youth center. Now, he owns a thriving furniture shop and employs three people from the community. He feels a deep responsibility to support the youth around him.

“I want others to see that change is possible,” Semir shares, his voice steady with conviction. “After my rehabilitation, I dedicated myself to building a better life, not just for me, but for those around me.” Undeterred by past challenges, Semir plans to expand his business and return to school.

Together, Endegena and Semir lead community activities that reflect their commitment to social change. They organize blood

donation drives, clean-up efforts, and awareness campaigns on crucial issues like SRH services. Their charisma and enthusiasm draw other young people to join the Family Guidance Association and make a difference.

“We integrate music, plays, and dance into our programs, making learning about SRH enjoyable and relatable!” they explain, highlighting their creative approach to educating the community.

“We all have untapped potential,” Semir urges his peers at one such event. "Don't waste your time on activities that lead nowhere. Invest your energy in initiatives that build skills and create a future!" His words resonate deeply, inspiring a sense of urgency and motivation among the crowd.

Their achievements have not gone unnoticed. Tariku Birhanetsega, the ICT Officer of FGAE and coordinator for SRH training speaks highly of both leaders. “Semir has created job opportunities and helped other youth develop skills in video editing and photography, as well as obtain their driver’s licenses,” he explains. “He exemplifies how determination can lead to personal success and community empowerment.”

Tariku also praises Endegena’s initiatives. “Her establishment of the girls' club at Jimma University was pivotal. She actively led programs on SRH and GBV, becoming a vital advocate. Together, through music and community clean-up events, she and Semir are making SRH education accessible and engaging.”

The Youth Friendly Services program supported by UNFPA is at the heart of these initiatives. This vibrant space offers music, drama, dance, literature, and free Wi-Fi, creating an environment where young people can learn and connect without barriers.

As they reflect on their journeys, both Endegena and Semir have a powerful message for the youth in Jimma: “Avoid wasting time on meaningless activities. There is so much potential within each of you. Engage in your community, learn, and grow.”

Endegena and Semir embody the promise of a brighter future, showcasing the transformative power of resilience, advocacy, and community involvement. Each step they take inspires a generation to pursue meaningful lives filled with purpose and opportunity.
