Ethiopia lost an icon and a staunch advocate of the right of women and girls.

The late Bogaletch Gebre, Boge as she was fondly referred to, dedicated much of her life battling practices such as Female Genital Mutilation that put women and girls in harm’s way. She mobilized hundreds of thousands of women, young girls and communities in the fight against harmful practices and gender based violence.

Her work around maternal health has also been pivotal in saving the precious lives of tens of thousands of women.

Her commitment, hard work and perseverance were unmatched registering huge successes.

Bogaletch Gebre and the organization she established, KMG-Ethiopia, were one of the strong and trusted partners of UNFPA over the last two decades in support of the cause of empowering women and girls.

UNFPA is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Bogaletch Gebre. Our deepest condolences go to her family, relatives and community.

Rest in Peace.
