The newly appointed Country Representative of UNFPA, Ms. Bettina Mass, presented today her credentials to Mrs. Hirut Zemene, State Minister for Foreign Affairs. Making remarks on the occasion, Mrs. Hirut appreciated UNFPA’s support to Ethiopia in the areas of Reproductive Health, Adolescent and youth development, gender and generation of data on population and development.
Ms. Bettina commended the progresses Ethiopia has made in recent years on various development indicators and noted that she was looking forward to working with the Ethiopian Government on enhancing the gains made. She indicated that the upcoming Population and Housing Census and the humanitarian response spearheaded by the Government in the country were among the focus areas of UNFPA’s interventions.
UNFPA is currently implementing its 8th Country Programme. The Country Programme is being implemented in 7 Regional States – Amhara, Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambellla, Oromia, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples, and Tigray – and the Addis Ababa City Administration covering over 90 percent of the Ethiopian population.
