In humanitarian situations, GBV service provision through GBV case management is the primary entry point for survivors to access and receive life-saving services especially since more established health and social services are typically lacking in emergency settings.
In collaboration with the National GBV Area of Responsibility (AoR) and Global GBV AoR, The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Ethiopia, launched the GBV Case Management Capacity Building Initiative (CBI) in Ethiopia in 2023, as part of the global effort to enhance the capacity of frontline humanitarian responders on GBV case management.
This training equipped 32 participants from Tigray, Afar, Amhara, and Addis Ababa, with the skills, commitment, and understanding of GBV CM based on the Interagency Gender-based Violence Case Management Guidelines. This diverse group included representatives from government agencies, UN organizations, international NGOs (INGOs), and local NGOs.
The program yielded impressive results. 12 participants qualified as Tier 1 certified trainers, and 11 participants achieved Tier 2 certification. These certified trainers will play a vital role in the step-down roll out of the GBV Case management capacity-building initiative at regional, zonal or organizational levels to ensure a standardized and high-quality approach to GBV case management, empowering frontline workers to deliver essential support to survivors across Ethiopia.
Feedback from participants indicated a remarkable 98.8% satisfaction rate with the training facilitation and a 98.9% satisfaction rate with the content. Participants expressed feeling well-equipped and confident in their ability to facilitate GBV Case Management training. ‘ Rozina Zerabruk, Center manager for Food for the Hungry Ethiopia (FHE) says "The training was incredibly informative and engaging and I feel more confident in applying the new skills learned."
This initiative by UNFPA Ethiopia represents a significant step forward in strengthening the quality of GBV case management services. By equipping frontline responders with the necessary skills and knowledge, the CBI has the potential to create a lasting impact on the lives of GBV survivors across the country.
