Handiya Abdu’s journey is one of resilience amidst adversity, a tale all too common in the Afar region, especially in Chifra woreda. At just 24, she’s already a mother of five with another child on the way. But her path to motherhood was anything but easy.
At the tender age of 14, Handiya was married off, a practice still prevalent in her community. She hadn’t even completed the 3rd grade when her family decided she should wed. Thus began a life filled with trials and tribulations.
Becoming a mother at such a young age added yet another layer of challenge to Handiya's already tough existence. She had to juggle the responsibilities of parenthood while still a child herself, facing the physical and emotional toll of childbirth without adequate support.
In 2018, when expecting her third child, complications arose during labor. Despite alarming signs, Handiya's family remained hopeful. It was only when she feared for her life that she implored them to seek help from Chifra Hospital.
Fortunately, UNFPA's support had equipped Chifra Hospital to handle such emergencies.
UNFPA's support of Chifra Hospital
UNFPA in partnership with the regional government, supported Chifra Hospital with medical equipment including ultrasounds and delivery beds, staff capacity building, and establishing Maternity Waiting Homes and Women and Girl's Friendly Spaces to ensure access to sexual and reproductive health information and services to vulnerable women and girls.
UNFPA also deployed midwives to the hospital to support the maternal health services.
With the assistance of the Danish government, the hospital also received an ambulance for reaching remote areas.
The timely arrival of the ambulance saved Handiya's life, teaching her the importance of seeking antenatal care during pregnancy. She vowed to prioritize antenatal checkups for subsequent pregnancies, leading to healthy deliveries.
"It was a lesson for me that each pregnancy is different and unpredictable, that only medical professionals can ensure my safety and avert any complications before they get worse'' she said.
Safe motherhood advocate
Her harrowing experience spurred Handiya to become an advocate within her community. She educates others on the dangers of child marriage and the necessity of proper healthcare during pregnancy. Through the Women & Girls Friendly Space at the hospital, she found support and empowerment, realizing her ability to effect change.
“I will make sure to provide awareness to the community about mothers who are going through pregnancy.”
Starting with her own family, Handiya's advocacy extends to friends and relatives, urging them to seek information on sexual and reproductive health. By sharing her story and knowledge, she hopes to inspire others to challenge harmful practices and pursue better futures for themselves and their children.
Handiya's journey from hardship to advocacy stands as a beacon of hope for those facing similar struggles, showing that with determination and support, positive change is possible.
