August 29, 2024, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a significant step toward youth empowerment and development, Ethiopia has launched its chapter of the African Youth and Adolescents Network on Population and Development (AfriYAN). Supported by UNFPA and implemented by the youth-led organization TaYA, this initiative aims to promote leadership, participation, and the rights of young people across the country.

The launch event, attended by 30 vibrant young leaders from 12 regions of Ethiopia, was filled with a sense of hope and excitement for the future. UNFPA Ethiopia representative Koffi Kouame emphasized the importance of this momentous occasion, stating, "Youth are not just the future but the vibrant present of Ethiopia. Your aspirations, challenges, and dreams shape the trajectory of Ethiopia's progress. AfriYAN Ethiopia is more than just a network; it is set to become a movement championing sexual and reproductive health and rights, promoting gender equality, and creating spaces for meaningful youth engagement."

H.E. Muna Ahmed, State Minister at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, conveyed her encouragement and support to the young leaders through a representative. "The ministry stands with you and is committed to supporting in any way we can. We understand that this is not the job of one sector alone, and we appreciate the engagement of UNFPA, TAYA, and, most importantly, the motivation of young people like yourselves," the representative said.

Ethiopia is a country rich with youthful energy, but its young people face numerous challenges, from limited access to quality sexual and reproductive health information and services to a lack of economic opportunities and participation in decision-making processes. Despite these hurdles, Ethiopian youth have shown incredible resilience, innovation, and determination.

AfriYAN is a network established to engage African youth and adolescents in population and development issues, fostering leadership and advocacy among young people. Through advocacy, policy dialogue, capacity building, and mentoring, AfriYAN promotes youth engagement and empowerment at all levels.

Ephrem Berhanu, Executive Director of TaYA, highlighted that the establishment of AfriYAN Ethiopia is a direct result of the passion and vision of young leaders. "This platform is expected to amplify the voices of youth, champion their rights, and empower them to become architects of their own futures," he said.

The launch coincides with the celebration of International Youth Day, which this year is themed ‘From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.’ This theme underscores the vital role of young people in leveraging digital technologies to drive progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Angel Babirye, President of the African Youth and Adolescent Network Eastern and Southern Africa (AfriYAN ESA), encouraged the young leaders to seize this opportunity to drive change. "With your brothers and sisters across Africa, you are the torchbearers of progress. AfriYAN is your platform to shape the narrative and build a brighter future for yourselves and future generations. We will be with you every step of the way, and I believe the Ethiopian chapter will soon transform into a beacon for many," she stated.

During the event, the youth discussed the way forward to strengthen the network, including addressing structural and logistical issues, enhancing communication, and fostering leadership. A roadmap was designed to guide these efforts, ensuring a strong foundation for the future of AfriYAN Ethiopia.
