On October 11, 2024, in celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, UNFPA Ethiopia launched an inspiring initiative to showcase the leadership potential of young girls. Ms. Rakeb Kassahun, a 12-year-old student at Seattle Academy, was chosen to act as UNFPA Ethiopia’s Representative for the day. This initiative aimed to amplify girls' voices, stressing the importance of investing in their education, health, and empowerment.

Throughout the day, Ms. Rakeb engaged in high-level meetings with key stakeholders, including government officials, UN representatives, and donors. She met with Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia; H.E. Stian Christensen, Ambassador of Norway to Ethiopia; Mr. Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa; and H.E. Ergoge Tesfaye, Minister of Women and Social Affairs. These interactions provided a platform for Ms. Rakeb to advocate for the rights and needs of adolescent girls in Ethiopia. She emphasized the need for targeted investments in education and healthcare, arguing that these are vital for sustainable development. Her clear and confident message was simple: investing in girls is an investment in Ethiopia’s future.

Ms. Rakeb’s day was filled with dynamic exchanges, where she confidently articulated her vision for girls in Ethiopia. During her conversation with H.E. Ergoge Tesfaye, she highlighted the transformative impact that improved access to education and reproductive health services could have on girls' futures. Her leadership and advocacy demonstrated the power and potential of young voices to influence change.

Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Rakeb expressed gratitude, saying, "Today, I felt the power of my voice and the impact we girls can make. I hope to inspire others to speak up and take action." Her words captured the essence of the initiative, which not only celebrated young girls' potential but also reinforced UNFPA’s commitment to gender equality and reproductive health.

This initiative highlighted the essential role of girls in shaping the future and underscored the transformative power of investing in their empowerment. Ms. Rakeb’s leadership serves as a powerful reminder that when girls are given opportunities, they can become driving forces for sustainable development and lasting change.
