Jijiga, Ethiopia, July 23, 2025 - A joint field mission to Jijiga, Somali region, highlighted the growing partnership between the Government of Japan, the Somali Regional State, and UNFPA in improving the health and well-being of women, girls, and young people.

H.E. SHIBATA Hironori, Ambassador of Japan to Ethiopia, together with UNFPA Ethiopia representative, Mr. Koffi Kouame, visited key facilities supported by Japan’s contribution to ensure access to quality reproductive health services and to empower young people in the region.

The delegation first met with officials of the Somali Regional Administration, reaffirming the strong collaboration to advance maternal and child health, gender equality, and opportunities for young people.

At Karamara Hospital, the team visited the maternity ward and toured the new Maternal and Child Health ward currently under construction. Once completed, the ward will significantly expand access to safe deliveries and specialized care for mothers and newborns.

The delegation also saw first-hand the impact of a mobile health clinic that brings life-saving reproductive health and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention services to remote communities. “This mobile clinic is often the only source of health care for women and girls in hard-to-reach areas,” said Mr. Koffi Kouame. “It is helping us ensure no one is left behind.”

Ambassador Shibata emphasized Japan’s commitment to supporting the Somali region: “The Government of Japan is proud to partner with UNFPA and the Somali Regional State. Together, we are working to save the lives of mothers and children, prevent violence against women, and give young people the opportunities they deserve.”

The visit concluded at a vibrant youth center, where young people are gaining access to information, skills, and safe spaces that promote health, peace, and opportunity. The center plays a vital role in equipping youth with tools for dialogue, leadership, and innovation.

UNFPA Ethiopia Representative, Mr. Koffi Kouame, underscored the importance of this collaboration: “Investing in women and young people is investing in the future. Japan’s partnership is making a tangible difference in the lives of communities in Somali region.”
