Addis Ababa, October 10, 2025 – Ethiopia marked the International Day of the Girl with an inspiring celebration held at Seattle School under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead!” The event brought together students, teachers, and high-level guests to honour the creativity, leadership, and potential of girls across the country.

The celebration was attended by H.E. Hikma Keyredin, State Minister of Women and Social Affairs; H.E. Dr. Simone Knapp, Ambassador of Austria to Ethiopia; H.E. Olivia Leslie, Ambassador of Ireland to Ethiopia; W/ro Mehrete Kirstos, Women and Social Affairs Mainstreaming Lead Executive Officer at the Ministry of Education; and Mr. Koffi Kouame, UNFPA Representative in Ethiopia.

In her remarks, State Minister Hikma Keyredin reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for girls to lead and contribute to national development, emphasizing that empowering girls is central to Ethiopia’s growth and equality agenda.

Ambassador Dr. Simone Knapp highlighted the power of education in unlocking girls’ potential and transforming communities. She encouraged continuous investment in girls’ learning to ensure they have the skills and confidence to lead change.

Ambassador Olivia Leslie spoke about the importance of building a world where equality is not just promised but practiced. “When girls have equal access to opportunities and resources, they lift entire communities,” she said.

Representing the Ministry of Education, W/ro Mehrete Kirstos commended Seattle School for creating an inclusive and empowering learning environment and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advancing girls’ education and leadership.

UNFPA Representative Koffi Kouame applauded the creativity and determination of Ethiopian girls. “UNFPA champions innovation and supports girls who are shaping the future with their ideas and courage,” he said.

The celebration featured inspiring showcases of innovation and talent. Solyana Hagos and Rediet Dawit demonstrated their inventions - the Agricultural Robot and the Smart Cane for the Visually Impaired—which drew admiration for their creativity and purpose. Rakeb Kassahun recited a powerful poem about girls’ strength, resilience, and dreams.

In recognition of their innovation and leadership, Solyana, Rediet, and Rakeb were awarded tablets and certificates. The school’s Girls’ Club also presented music and dance performances that celebrated the spirit and achievements of girls.

As part of its continued support, UNFPA donated computers, dignity kits, and reference books to the school and upgraded its internet connection to strengthen access to digital learning and information.

The International Day of the Girl celebration served as a reminder that when girls are empowered to learn, lead, and innovate, they drive lasting progress for their communities and the nation.
