The Girl I Am, the Change I Lead

This International Day of the Girl, UNFPA in Ethiopia handed the microphone to three remarkable girls, Rakeb Kassahun, Rediet Dawit, and Solyana Hagos, whose ideas and determination remind us what happens when girls are given the space to dream, create, and lead.

At just 12 to 14 years old, these girls are proving that innovation has no age limit.

Rakeb is a brilliant student with a curious mind and an unshakable belief in the power of learning. Her passion for knowledge drives her to explore new ideas and push beyond what’s expected for her age.

Rediet, 14, has developed an agricultural robotics technology that allows farmers to control the watering of their crops directly from their phones. Her invention is rooted in her desire to make life easier for farmers and contribute to smarter, more sustainable agriculture.

Solyana, 12, created a smart sensor blind stick that assists visually impaired individuals to move safely and independently. Her innovation reflects both empathy and creativity, seeing a challenge and designing a solution that transforms lives.

Throughout the week, Rakeb, Rediet, and Solyana took over UNFPA Ethiopia’s social media platforms to share their stories, inspirations, and dreams for the future. Their voices represent the promise of a generation that is bold, connected, and ready to lead Ethiopia’s digital transformation.

Their stories remind us why investing in girls’ education, innovation, and digital access matters, because when girls lead, everyone moves forward.

Rakeb

Last year, for the International Day of the Girl, we welcomed Rakeb Kassahun to step into the role of UNFPA Representative Mr. Koffi Kouame for a day, and she exceeded all expectations. Rakeb led high-level meetings, engaged with ministers and diplomats, and delivered a powerful message: investing in girls is investing in a better future for all. A brilliant student with a curious mind, Rakeb believes deeply in the power of learning. Her passion drives her to explore new ideas, push boundaries, and inspire her peers, becoming a leader in her own right. This year, she returned to lead the way for other girls to use their voices, share their ideas, and showcase their innovations.

Rediet

Meet Rediet Dawit, 14, a young innovator who developed an agricultural robotics technology that helps farmers control the watering of their crops directly from their phones. Her creativity is driven by a simple but powerful goal: to make life easier for farmers and promote smarter, more sustainable agriculture. At UNFPA, we believe that when we invest in girls, we invest in a smarter, stronger, and more equitable future for all.
