Gender Equality

The GTP stipulates to pursue an objective of ensuring women's active participation in and benefit from the country's economic development and political affairs. It also calls for increasing women's participation in the social sector and their empowerment by abolishing Harmful Traditional Practices.

UNFPA's Response and support:

Support to policies and institutional capacity building

  • UNFPA has provided financial and technical support to the Ministry of Women's, Children and Youth Affairs for the development of policy instruments such as the National Gender Mainstreaming Guideline, the Women Development and Change Package and Women's Development Program.
  • The Fund has strengthened the institutional capacities of the gender machineries at the federal and regional levels in the development of gender mainstreaming guidelines as well as ensuring effective gender mainstreaming at all levels.
  • Support has also been provided to undertake advocacy interventions on issues related to gender and Violence Against Women/Gender-based Violence at federal and regional levels

Engaging communities

  • UNFPA is supporting the implementation of Community Conversation process as a methodology to proactively engage and involve communities to facilitate social change process to address issues of gender, harmful practices and sexual and reproductive health.
  • The Fund has also supported the establishment of different community level structures (Community Counselor's Committee, Women Advisory Groups, Multi-Purpose Gender Justice Group, GBV Action Group) to continue and sustain the efforts initiated by the Community Conversation process.
  • UNFPA is working as the lead agency in the management and support of the Leave No Woman Behind Joint Programme, which is being implemented in the Amhara and Tigray Regions. This holistic programme is supporting the government's efforts in achieving the MDG goal of gender equality and women's empowerment through its components of capacity building and social mobilization; Literacy and Life Skills; Reproductive Health; and livelihood.

Preventing harmful traditional practices

  • UNFPA is supporting programmes, which actively engage and involve community members through a culturally sensitive approach and community level structures to lead the social change process to address harmful practices.
  • Interventions are being conducted to create conducive and supportive environment to realize the process of declaring abandonment of the practice of FGM/C in the Afar Region as part of the Joint Programme on the Accelerated Abandonment of FGM/C.
  • The Early Marriage Prevention Programme the Fund is supporting in the Amhara Region through a model of integrating community mobilization with strong community involvement has been identified as one good practice that has great potential to be scaled up in different parts of the country and beyond.
