The National Honorary Goodwill Ambassador of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Ethiopia, Athlete Messeret Defar, renewed her agreement of ambassadorship today.

The two-year agreement was signed between Athlete Meseret Defar and Mr. Benoit Kalasa, UNFPA Country Representative.

Messeret Defar was appointed as UNFPA Ethiopia National Honorary Goodwill Ambassador right after her return from her spectacular performance at the Athens Olympics in 2004, where she won gold medal. UNFPA Ethiopia office appointed her as Honorary National Goodwill Ambassador to champion the causes of women, youth, and the prevention of HIV/AIDS.

"Just like her shining athletics career, Messeret Defar has demonstrated strong commitment in promoting issues of women's empowerment, adolescent and youth development, and the prevention of HIV/AIDS," noted Mr. Benoit Kalasa, UNFPA Country Representative. He expressed his belief that Messeret would continue to advocate the causes and will help to send a powerful message that would reach the hearts and minds of people throughout Ethiopia in the coming years.

As part of her role as a National Honorary Goodwill Ambassador, Messeret has attended various programs and events organized by UNFPA. She is among the prominent individuals UNFPA is working with across the world to publicize its mission and priorities and to convey messages about its activities.
